This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct lifting operations in the Resources and Infrastructure Industries.
This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.
Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.
Elements and Performance Criteria:
- Plan and prepare for lifting operations
- Access, interpret and apply load handling documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
- Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements before proceeding
- Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
- Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
- Develop a preliminary lifting plan considering essential information
- Check/confirm job feasibility and schedule with the load designer and other relevant persons
- Finalise and confirm lifting plan, including the scheduling of required resources
- Prepare for lifting
- Identify, select, inspect, assemble and certify lifting equipment, materials and tools required for the planned lift
- Label unserviceable equipment, materials and tools
- Move loads
- Deduce and confirm appropriate safe working loads and centre of gravity using load charts and sling tags/charts prior to load moving
- Direct the movement of the load using standard signals for load moving
- Perform load moving in accordance with the plan
- Perform work safely
- Connect lifting gear to load
- Connect load to movement device using appropriate and certified equipment
- Ensure stability of the load by application of load movement procedure, temporary bracing and/or load support
- Follow appropriate specifications during the placement and securing of the load
Upon successful completion, course participants will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment. The Statement is issued by IM Training (RTO 70023).
